A Promise

“Are you ready to depart?” he asked you.
“Yes. Just tell me where.”
“Radiant Garden. For recon.” his replies were always short.
Simply nodding your head, he opened a portal for you and you went through without hesitance.

Chasing the two boys was growing tiresome so you stopped. They seemed to notice you were far behind, turning themselves around to go back to you.
“You alright?” the blue haired boy asked with heavy breaths.
“Yeah, my legs just got tired.”
“Learn to run faster and maybe you won’t have to run as long then.” the redhead commented, earning himself a smack from the other boy. Their brotherly relationship was always amusing, and you were surprised that they managed to still be friends after all this time. But you guessed that what brothers do, they stay together no matter what.
How you became a part of their group was surely a wonder, but ever since, the three of you have been inseparable. You all looked out for each other, that was a promise you all made. And you would stick together, even when the biggest adventure of your life was just about to begin. The only problem was whether you all would remember your promise.

The recon mission didn’t take you long. Even for your first time there, you scoured the land like you’ve done it a million times before. You forced yourself to stay there a while longer so Saix wouldn’t be suspicious of your mission. The briefing you gave him after your return happened so fast as if it were perfectly rehearsed. He raised a cautious eyebrow at you, and you shrug your shoulders.
“You sure you checked everywhere?”
“Positive. Every street, every garden, and every fountain.” you replied restlessly. He never gave you too much trouble, but his skepticism from time to time did rub you the wrong way. “It’s just a recon. Was I supposed to find something else?” there was a small edge to your tone. He eyed you intensely, but even his golden eyes couldn’t shake your confidence. When you did give him attitude, he would try to intimidate you, and once even threatened to report your behavior to the leader, but you felt no reason to worry. You were the only one brave enough to call him on his bluff, and when you did, he would dismiss you right away leaving you to let out a few giggles. It was hard to explain why you felt the need to give him a hard time every so often, but there was just something about him; something that gave you this inkling that deep inside his nonexistent being, he didn’t want to be the one with the ice cold heart. You made it your personal mission to relieve him and thaw it out.

The next day you were paired up with Axel, being sent to Radiant Garden again with the mission to ‘do more recon and keep an eye out for suspicious activity.’
“Axel, I was here all day yesterday and there wasn’t one bit of anything suspicious.” you told him.
“Eh, whatever. If he just wants to keep us busy, that’s fine. Easier day for us, right?”
“I guess. He’s never sent us out on such boring missions before.”
“Speak for yourself.” Axel retorted. Comparing your level of rebelliousness to Axel made you look like an angel, so you only imagined what Saix possibly had Axel do for punishment. “If he ever sends you to Neverland, you know you’re in trouble.”
“Why’s that?” you asked with a few giggles.
“Not that it was boring, but it was torture!” he explained. “Let’s just say, flying isn’t my thing.”
“I’ll be sure to keep a note of that.”

The two of you wandered around the land, maybe twice already and it wasn’t even close to the end of the day. As you passed through the shopping district, something caught both of your attention.
“Want some ice cream?” Axel offered.
“Sure. But don’t you think we should try to focus on work here?”
“We already did as much as we could, so let’s get some ice cream and call it a day.”
With a shrug of your shoulders in defeat, he went to buy some ice cream. You weren’t sure what you would say for the briefing, but you hoped a treat would lighten up the mood.
“Axel buy three!”
“Why?”
“Because.” came your reply, and he obliged. He often gave in to your demands and you weren’t really sure why, even when they were ridiculous and got him in trouble that one time. In fact, the thought that maybe you were the one who got him sent to Neverland crossed your mind as a possibility; but he would never blame you for it or even let you know it was your fault. He did anything to protect you. You were wary of his intentions at first, but they quickly passed; it just felt right and sometimes it even made something inside you stir. An indescribable feeling, but questioning it was never in your agenda.
“Ready to head back?” he asked as he appeared with the three ice creams. You nodded your head and created a portal.

Once back, the room was filled with a few members waiting to give their briefing, so Axel and you waited,  but by the time he was nearly done his ice cream, it was finally your turn.
“What’s the report for today?”
“Well, we did a couple rounds and didn’t find much. The busiest area was the garden so we couldn’t hang around there for too long.”
“That's exactly what you’re meant to do. Have you tried being covert?” Saix asked with a hint of annoyance.
“If I knew what I was looking for then maybe I would have thought of that!”
“Okay okay, easy now. Look, we tried our best. Now we know where to focus on so we’ll try again tomorrow.” Axel interrupted before the shouting match could continue.
“Did you even try this time? Or did you just eat ice cream all day?”
“I already told you we did try! We even got you one.” you say, holding up a popsicle for him.
“You think you can excuse your poor efforts by bringing this back? Do you take any part of your job seriously?” Saix continued to ask in a more threatening tone. You stepped back, for once being a little intimidated by his presence, causing Axel to step in immediately.
“Don’t blame her for this, it was my idea to get ice cream. Not every mission goes 100% as planned, alright? We’ll try again tomorrow.” he repeated.
“You of all people should know how serious these missions are for us, as an organization. I suggest you prepare well for tomorrow, because your going somewhere else on your own.”
“Nothing I can’t handle.” Axel whispered to himself as he gave you a nudge.
“As you for,” Saix said as he turned to you, “Don’t allow another slip up again or expect punishment.” and with that final statement, he left the room.
“Axel?”
“Hmm?” the redhead turned his attention to you.
“Is he sending you to Neverland?” you asked quietly, still a little shaken up from the meeting.
“Don’t worry about me, kid. Go get some rest, you need to be extra sharp tomorrow.” he gave your hair a ruffle and then left, leaving you standing there with two melting ice creams.

“Why are you two always sneaking around?” you asked the boys one afternoon.
“We’re not sneaking around. Just eating ice cream.” the red head replied.
“I don’t mean right now! I mean the past couple days when you’ve been avoiding me.”
“We’re not avoiding you.” the blue haired boy answered. “There was actually a surprise we’re working on.” the red head immediately hit his arm.
“Don’t tell her!” he whispered to him.
“Hey, we’re in this together now, we made a promise.”
“What are you talking about?” you asked them, not following their discussion.
“We can’t say just yet, but tomorrow, something big is happening. Are you in?” the blue haired asked you. You looked from one boy to another and something inside you stirred. Good or bad, you all made a promise. With a hint of a smile on your lips, the blue haired boy lifted his hand, pinky out, allowing you and the redhead to hook your hands with his.
“No matter what, we stick together.”
“It’s a promise.”

“It’s a promise.” the words fell gently from your lips. You stared up at the castle in all its greatness, feeling something within stir. It was a feeling with great intensity, unsure of what was causing it, but the closer you got the to castle, the more intense the feeling within got and it was soon becoming overwhelming. Something was forcing you into the castle and almost like a memory, you could picture the inside that was filled with mysteries, awakening a familiar curiosity. Just as you reached the  garden gate that separated you from the castle, a pain overcame your head causing you to collapse. You held your head in your hands, using all your might to make it go away but it was useless. The last you saw was the blur of a figure in black approaching you.

The next time you awoke was in your own bed with Axel sitting by your bedside.
“Good morning sleepyhead.”
“Hi, how long was I out?”
“Only a day.”
“Am I going to be punished?” was the next question that came to your mind.
“Nah. In fact, you should be thanking him.”
“For what?”
“Saving you.” as those words left his lips, you fell back on your bed. He had to be joking, right? “Take as much time as you need to rest, Roxas and I are covering your missions.”
“Wait, are you being serious though?”
“Yeah, he was the only one who knew where you were exactly. So when you didn’t come back by nightfall he went looking for you.”
“Oh.” was all you could say.
“He isn’t so scary now, is he?” Axel joked. You had enough strength in you to smack his arm. “Hey, I’m the one who saved your butt the day before so be nice. Or I’m making you taking flying lessons with me next time.”
“I don’t know what you consider torture because that sounds like fun to me.”

“Yeah yeah. Just get better faster so I don’t have to do double duty anymore.”
“After I talk to Saix.”
“Fine.” he said as he stood up. He told you that Saix was probably in his own room or the Grey room to make your search easier, but you only nodded your head. There was elsewhere you wanted to look.

And you were right, up high in the Altar of Naught stood the blue haired figure who saved your life. He often came to admire Kingdom Hearts, you have watched him once or twice before. He was usually silent, just looking up at the heart shaped moon as if it would provide him the answers he seeks. Though you were afraid to interrupt at first, it quickly went away because there was a matter at hand that needed to be addressed.
“It’s lovely isn’t it?” You quietly asked. Saix barely spared a glance over his shoulder as you approached.
“You should be resting.”
“Recovery is more than just lying in bed all day.” you retorted as you came up to stand beside him.
“Then you better not complain when I assign you your next mission.”
“I never complain.”
He side eyed you, his golden eyes seeming playful for once.
“Then I can assure this won’t happen again?” he tested you.
“That’s asking for a lot, I’m afraid. But there is something I must ask you: why did you send me there?”
“It was selfish on my part.”
“What do you mean?”
“I hoped you could find some information about the castle, and the lab that rests within.”

“Would this information help all of us?”
“Yes.” he replied quietly.
“Then how is that selfish?”
“I should have done it myself.” Saix admitted, his eyes looking down. You came closer to look into his eyes, seeing that the gold was not permanent but had a blue undertone.
“But you saved me.” you tell him. He briefly looks at you, giving you a chance to show him a smile. “You kept your promise.” as you tell him this, his eyes change completely to blue.
“You remember?”
“Of course I do!” you answer nonchalantly. “It took some time but, we all made a promise, to stick together.”
“A lot has changed since then.”
“It happens, change is natural, but it doesn’t mean it’s forever. We’ll find a way, I know it.” you took his hand into yours and gave it a reassuring squeeze and for the first time in all that you could remember, he smiled at you. It was only for a brief moment until his eyes shut tight and his other hand grabbed his head. He looked like he was in pain, suffering from the same illness that plagued you earlier. He let go of your hand to steady himself, willing for the pain to pass. His eyes flickered from blue back to gold and the smile was more than just gone, but any trace of it nearly disappeared from your memory. Unwilling to let that go, you immediately wrap your arms around him, burying your head in his chest as tears began to escape. You softly mumbled ‘that everything will be okay, that it’s your turn to protect him’. After a few moments of struggle, you eventually felt his arms wrap tightly around you.
“Thank you.” he said barely above a whisper.
“I guess we’re even now.”
“No, I owe you more than you know for how I’ve acted.”

“You’re forgiven as long as you don’t go back on your word.”

“It’s a promise.”
Hello everyone! This is the first of a few requests I have, so I'm really happy to finally be posting something! This was definitely a bit harder to write, I had an idea from the start but how to approach was weird haha, this is done a bit differently than what I've done in the past. Let's just say, there may be more to this, or I might connect it to another request I have. I don't know, we'll see! None the less, I hope you all enjoy! Feel free to leave comments/critique, it's always appreciated =D

Very nice. I always love reading stories that show off Saix's soft side.
